Caribbean Reef Octopus Peter Island BVI

Wow amazing Caribbean Reef Octopus spotted today

What an amazing site this afternoon whilst snorkeling in Great Harbour, Peter Island in the British Virgin Islands. A shoal of Yellow Tail Snapper were surrounding something on the seabed. I swam over to investigate because I’ve never seen anything like this before. The fish wouldn’t move, they were not frightened by my appearance; they were too intent on watching the seabed. I soon spotted a large Caribbean Reef Octopus that was sat squat on the bottom wedged in-between two rocks in a circular shape. The Octopus saw me immediately and started to change colour to try and improve on his already near perfect disguise. The Octopus wasn’t as brave as the Snapper he made a run for it, immediately changing colour to blend in with the white sandy bottom, however his trusty friends followed him; again surrounding the Octopus when he settled, this time clinging to a rock and instantaneously blending in so that you couldn’t see him.

This was truly one of those special moments. I’ve seen Caribbean Reef Octopus out here on numerous occasions but l have never seen one before that had a following of Yellow Tail Snapper.

Kids are Happy = Mum & Dad are Happy = Best Vacation Ever Onboard SY Pacific Wave

Kids are Happy = Mum & Dad are Happy = Best Vacation Ever Onboard SY Pacific Wave

Do you want the best family vacation ever? Do you want to be able to spend uninterrupted time with your family in an environment that lets your kids grow and encounter new life experiences? Well chartering Pacific Wave for a British Virgin Islands (BVI) crewed yacht charter is the answer! Pacific Wave is the best luxury yacht to share with your family for your next Caribbean vacation.

Just because you are onboard a yacht, doesn’t mean that you have to loose out on the luxuries of a hotel. Onboard Pacific Wave you can enjoy the luxuries of a boutique hotel afloat that Mum will love, plus you can enjoy all of the extras that the kids will love!

Instead of just staying at one resort, onboard SY Pacific Wave you will sail to a different island within the Virgin Islands each day. This gives you plenty of time to explore ashore where there’s great hiking and stunning white sandy beaches, and for the kids to enjoy Pacific Wave’s water sports; we have children’s waterskis, a donut, and a wakeboard plus our great Caribe deluxe 15ft dinghy with Yamaha 70hp engine. You can enjoy great snorkeling for all of the family and also a two man ocean kayak to explore the anchorages in. And most importantly the family can learn how to sail onboard this beautiful Italian 72ft yacht. And the best part is that all of this is included in the price of chartering Pacific Wave. We do not charge an additional relocation fee to move Pacific Wave to St Thomas unlike other yachts. You have a great choice of direct flights flying from the USA to St Thomas. This means that we will meet you at St Thomas Airport and you will only be a 10 minute taxi ride away from boarding Pacific Wave, it’s so simple and easy, and that’s what you want on a family vacation.

You do not need to know anything about sailing to enjoy a family vacation onboard Pacific Wave. You have a professional yacht crew who are also owner operators, who will look after you. You can always be assured that when you charter an owner operated yacht your best interests are always being looked after. It is in the interest of the crew to look after their guests because they want you to return and charter sailing yacht Pacific Wave again and again. As owner operators we consider safety of your family a top priority and that is why Pacific Wave is a fully commercially coded and insured Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) vessel. We undertake an annual survey to check all of Pacific Wave’s safety equipment by an independent MCA surveyor. It is important to us to know that we have the safest yacht on the water for your family, so that you can sit back and just enjoy your vacation.

If your family are non-sailors and you are concerned that you or your kids may not like the sailing, don’t be! Pacific Wave glides through the water with a very gentle motion so we are perfect for non-sailors. We have a large cockpit and all of our lines run outside so it is extremely safe for the family. All of our guests love sailing on Pacific Wave.

Our guest suite configuration is great for families. We have a large owners full width master stateroom at the rear of Pacific Wave with two double berths. Then in front of our large saloon area we have two mirror image guests suites with up and over berths (bunks); the lower beds are ¾ width and the upper berths are singles. Our families love this configuration and the kids can’t wait to try out the top berths. This layout is far better than a catamaran where you tend to get all doubles so your kids may end up sharing.

So for that great family vacation think about chartering the stunning yacht Pacific Wave.

So what better way to escape the cold at home and to relax and unwind in a stress-free environment than to be on a private luxury charter yacht in the beautiful BVI!

What are you waiting for book the best family vacation ever, today!

Cam Bay BVI National Park

Great Camanoe Island the Jewel in the Crown of the British Virgin Islands

Great Camanoe Island is the jewel in the crown of this cluster of tiny islands that make up the British Virgin Islands. This private island has approximately 40 private homes located on the southeast tip of the island. The larger northern end of the island is totally uninhabited and it is a breeding ground for many tropical birds during the summer months. The two sections of Great Camanoe Island are divided by a flat area of land which belongs to the BVI National Park and encompasses Cam Bay to the east side and Lee Bay to the west.

There is a choice of three anchorages around Great Camanoe. To the east in-between Great Camanoe and Marina Cay Island there are a large number of mooring buoys, however there is still room to drop anchor. In the winter months this anchorage can be open to the strong easterly winds and swell, but if you are lucky you can tuck in behind Marina Cay for more protection. There is excellent snorkeling in this location on a reef called Diamond Reef. Due to its location you will often be rewarded with large fish swimming past into the deeper water like large Porcupine Fish, Spotted Eagle Rays, Turtles and if you’re lucky which l was, a rare free swimming Atlantic Black Seahare, our charter guest was really pleased to see this. This site is also a dive site.

The second anchorage is in Lee Bay here you will find a rocky bottom but the holding is good. This anchorage is untenable if there is any northerly swell. The snorkeling here is good and the topography is huge granite boulders. Again you can expect to see larger shoals of big fish swimming past, however there are fewer reef fish in this location. One of my favorite dive sites in the BVI is located in this bay called The Maze. This is an interesting dive with boulders, ledges and a great cave. You swim along large channels that have been cut into the ocean floor and you will see a good selection of fish and coral including Redlip Blennies, and if you are lucky a Spanish Dancer Nudibranch. The current can be strong in this location.

The third anchorage is for shallow draft vessels ideally suited to catamarans that can anchor in Cam Bay. This is a lovely anchorage if the conditions are right with no northerly swell. You approach the anchorage through a narrow gap in the reef and anchor in sand in front of the white sandy beach of Cam Bay. There is a tiny path that links Cam Bay through to Lee Bay, so you can always walk through the National Park if your draft is too great to anchor in Cam Bay.

BVI Sunset from Cooper Island

BVI Sunset from Cooper Island down the Sir Francis Drake Channel

Cooper Island is a tiny private island nestled in-between Salt Island and Ginger Island in the British Virgin Islands. It has a small private resort on the Island with individual guest cottages and it’s famous bar and restaurant. Cooper Island Beach Club is a great location to watch the sunset down the Sir Francis Drake Channel. And as with most bars in the BVI it has its customary Happy Hour where you can enjoy rum punch and local beers. There is also a gift shop and dive shop on Cooper Island.

The main anchorage is directly in front of Cooper Island Beach Club Resort called Manchioneel Bay. It obtains its name from the poisonous Manchioneel Trees that used to line this pretty crescent shaped beach. The new owners of the resort removed all of these trees about 5 years ago and have replaced them with non-poisonous Sea Grapes. The anchorage here is full of mooring buoys because it is a recognised stop over for the bareboat fleet of charter yachts. So larger yachts have to anchor further out in deeper water. The seabed around the mooring field is covered in turtle weed, so you are often rewarded by turtles swimming around the yachts. This anchorage tends to be quite rolly. During the night when the current in-between Cooper Island and Salt Island changes direction you will find yourself broadside to the swell for an hour or so.

A good winter anchorage is found in Haulover Bay on the south side of Cooper Island, the topography here is rocky, but you can tuck in out of the swell and have a very settled night, providing that there is no south in the wind.

Snorkeling is great around Cooper Island. You have Cistern Point located directly to the south of Manchioneel Beach, and you also have Chromis Reef located to the south of Haulover Bay, both of these sites are full of reef fish with a rocky granite boulder topography. Do watch out for the current at both of these sites, it can be strong in-between these tiny islands. These sites are also dive sites, and around Cooper Island you also have Inganess Bay located south of Cistern Point, this 136 foot inter-island freighter was damaged in Hurricane Bertha in July 1996 and was then sunk in this location later that year to create an artificial reef. Wreck Alley located offshore from Red Bluff, where four boats were purposely sunk to create both a wreck and reef dive site. You also have Thumb Rock on the southwest tip of Cooper Island and Markoe Point on the southeast tip of Cooper Island.

Christmas Day Snorkel off Pacific Wave

Christmas Charter onboard Pacific Wave in the BVI

Have you ever wondered how magical it would be to escape the cold wet winter weather at home and to spend Christmas onboard a Luxury Crewed Charter Yacht in the BVI? Well let me tell you how great your Christmas could be onboard the stunning yacht Pacific Wave in the beautiful British Virgin Islands.

Typically the majority of our charters start out from Yacht Haven Grande Marina, St Thomas USVI because flights are easier from the USA to this location. Pacific Wave’s crew will meet you at the airport and accompany you on the short 10 minute taxi ride to the marina where you can board Pacific Wave. After a safety briefing we will set sail for the beautiful island of St John where we will anchor for the evening in the National Park. This gives you time to unpack, relax, take a swim or a stroll on the beautiful world famous Maho Bay Beach voted one of the top 100 beaches of the world, and enjoy a famous Pacific Wave Rum Punch.

The next morning after breakfast we will sail to West End on Tortola to clear in with Customs and Immigration and from then on we will be cruising throughout the beautiful British Virgin Islands.

Islands that we will visit during your cruise are Norman Island otherwise known as Treasure Island, Peter Island, Great Camanoe Island, North Sound Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke (JVD).

Christmas Eve and as the sunset nears all of the yachts in the anchorage of North Sound Virgin Gorda start to get excited awaiting the annual Lighted Boat Parade. As soon as it is dark a convoy of tiny boats brightly lit with fairy lights playing Caribbean carols weave in and out of the anchored yachts. This is where the guests get really excited, the louder you applaud and blow Pacific Wave’s horn the longer the little Lighted Boats will circle us. Be warned there’s competition from the other yachts, which are all trying to attract the Parades attention. Excitement over and it’s time for bed with stockings out ready for Santa Claus in the morning; no chimney to come down but we have our 100ft mast instead!

Christmas morning has dawned and another beautiful sail awaits us. Enjoy a snorkel in the crystal clear warm waters of the Caribbean and a walk on a white sandy beach, all of the things that you cannot do back at home on Christmas Day. And for something extra special Pacific Wave has purchased a lovely Harrods Christmas Cake from London.  This cake is made by the same cake makers that have just made Prince William & Kate’s baby daughter Charlotte’s christening cake; what a treat, cake fit for the British Royal Family and you can enjoy it onboard Pacific Wave on Christmas Day!

It’s our final day already and time to head back to Yacht Haven Grande Marina where we will have a private appointment with US Customs and Immigration and then sadly it’s time to disembark Pacific Wave, until next time!

So instead of putting up with the cold wet weather this winter, why not charter the beautiful Pacific Wave and enjoy a fun time in the BVI in the warm Caribbean Sun and enjoy dining on award winning cuisine under the stars.

Dolphins seen off Guana Island BVI

Guana Island beautiful white sandy shores & dolphins – BVI

Guana Island BVI photo taken from the stern of Pacific Wave

Guana Island is a private island located to the north of Tortola. It is another BVI island that is blessed with numerous white sandy beaches. It is home to the Guana Island Resort that is totally private; the only way that you can visit this resort is to stay on the island. Passing yachtsmen are not welcome on this island.

There is however a nice anchorage on the western shore of the resort where larger yachts can anchor and smaller yachts can pickup a mooring buoy. The beach here is stunning and it’s a great spot to watch the sunset in the late spring and early summer months.  If you’re lucky you may even have a dolphin visit the anchorage, we’ve seen dolphins here on numerous occasions.

Dolphins seen off Guana Island BVI

There is a second anchorage at the southwest corner of the island closest to Tortola; here there are day mooring buoys. This is called Monkey Point and it is a snorkeling spot. Here the snorkeling is all about larger fish that may swim by and the underwater topography rather than the corals.

Both anchorages are untenable if any northerly swell is present, normally during the winter months.

You can visit Guana Island whilst on a Luxury Crewed Charter of the BVI’s aboard the beautiful monohull SY Pacific Wave. There’s no better way to visit all of the stunning BVI islands than on a BVI Crewed Yacht Charter with owner operators Lynn and Mark.

You can read more about our favorite BVI anchorages off Norman Island, Peter Island and Virgin Gorda plus anchorages of the beautiful island of St John USVI.

Margaret at the Helm Sir Francis Drake Channel

Encouraging young people to sail and dive

During our New Year Charter this year Margaret, the teenage daughter of our lovely guests from New York, really enjoyed sailing onboard Pacific Wave. We encouraged her to have a go at taking the wheel. I talked to Margaret about Ocean Star, a sail training boat that is based in the BVI during the summer months.

l was delighted when l received an email from Margaret a few weeks ago to say that she was en-route to the airport to fly out to the BVI, and that she had signed up with Ocean Star for a 20 day semester.

I’ve just found out how it went:

Hi Lynn!

It was an amazing time. We spent the first five days in the BVIs learning how to dive and work the basics of our vessel. We did our confined water dives so that when we got down island we could do some deeper things around reefs. We had some pretty long passages which were a great bonding time for the crew. Seeing the sunrise and or a sunset on watch definitely made any new crew member fall in love with sailing. It’s safe to say that our entire crew certainly caught the bug. I hope to be back some day and to do more trips like it, hopefully for longer.

Thanks for checking in and for encouraging me to do this! Wishing the best winds and weather to you all and Pacific Wave!

-Margaret

How good is that! This young girl has taken to sailing! She went off on her own leaving her two brothers behind, and she had a great time not only sailing but learning to dive at the same time.

Pacific Wave is proud that we gave her the encouragement to have a go.
